Embracing the Now and Ceasing the Pursuit: A Dance with the Present Moment

Cup of Coffee

There's a famous quote by Oscar Wilde that I adore, "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." How many of us are truly living in the here and now, savoring each aromatic breath of life and abandoning the ceaseless pursuit of an elusive purpose? It sounds like a tall order, right? But, the beauty of life lies exactly in these unplanned moments. Like a delightful surprise of a fresh cup of coffee.

Always on the Go? Slow Down

As a species, we've become experts in future planning. Just think about it. We live daily with a relentless thirst for achievement and boundless passion to reach a predefined destination. Does it sound like you too? I've been there.

But, this continuous pursuit of purpose can leave us feeling like a hamster on a wheel, moving so fast yet staying in the same place. Our existence becomes a waiting room where we hold a token for a future appointment with happiness and fulfillment.

Here and Now: Flavors of the Moment

Just as we aim for a purpose-filled future, remember that life's sweetness doesn't lie months away but rather in the present - within those small magical moments we tend to overlook. A soft whisper of the breeze, a hearty laugh exchanged with a friend or the echo of rain tapping against the window.

Eckhart Tolle, in his book 'The Power of Now,' teaches us about the importance of simply being in the present moment. And when I say "being," it's not just physical presence but mental and emotional. As I learned to cherish my 'now,' I also discovered a new level of peace with the world.

Finding Joy along the Journey

Like you, I also have moments where I feel drowned in pursuing my goals, completely ignoring the journey. Then I realize, achievement isn't only about the end goal but also about the joy found in the process. Each minute accomplishment and every lesson learned is a mini-celebration of progress, a link in the chain of our purpose.

As the ancient philosopher Lao Tzu said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Let's find peace in our steps rather than just the final destination.

Anchoring Futures with the Present

So you might ask, "How do we shift from a future-focused approach to a present-oriented mindset?" It has taken me some time, but here are a handful of strategies that helped me:

  • Practicing Mindfulness: It's like having an internal compass directing you toward the present. Simple activities like mindful eating, meditation, or a nature walk introduce a newfound appreciation for the 'now.'

  • Rediscovering Gratitude: I started keeping a gratitude journal, jotting down my daily blessings. It's a gentle reminder that happiness comes from gratitude for what we have now rather than waiting for future gains.

  • Harnessing your Senses: Be present in each moment: savor the warmth of your coffee or tea, listen to the rustling leaves, and soak in the sunset hues. This heightened sense-based experience can ground you firmly in the present.

Remember, these strategies are not overnight solutions - they involve a slow collective shift in one's lifestyle.

Dance with the Rhythm of 'Now'

Having a purpose gives life an overarching meaning, but don't let it overshadow the glow of your present. Find joy in your journey, relish every experience, and rhythmically sway to the beats of 'now.'

As Louise Hay beautifully nailed it, "The point of power is always in the present moment." I've found that my purpose naturally unfolds when I live in the present, hold space for my own experiences, and engage authentically with the world.

Your richest treasures don't lie at the end of your journey or future achievements but in the richness of living a mindful life - one present moment at a time. And remember, my friend, you're already a part of this wonderful dance of life. Keep dancing! 🔮.
